City of Angels, winner of six Tony Awards, is one of the jazziest, swingingest, bluesiest musicals ever to hit Broadway – and CoSA. Styled in film noir, it tells the story of a disillusioned crime novelist trying to adapt his latest novel into a screenplay as his marriage falls apart. Based on a book by Larry Gelbart of M*A*S*H* fame and incorporating scat singing (using the voice to imitate an instrument), big band rhythms and lush movie themes, this jazzy, seductive, snappy musical is set in a palm-studded outpost of 1940s Hollywood. The musical opens April 20 at 7pm and features the talented musical theatre and drama students of the Coronado School of Arts.
City of Angels probes the complexity of writers' relationships with characters who dominate and often eclipse them. Indeed, it's actually two shows in one. In the show in in color, Stine (Spencer Lynn) tries to fend off an interfering Hollywood boss (played by Myles Manning) and pen a screenplay of which he can be proud. In the black-and-white show, the gumshoe detective Stone (Will Boone) is hired by the married siren Alaura Kingsley (Isabella Wagner) to find her missing step-daughter, Mallory (Grace Workman), a girl whom Stone ends up very much wanting to find for reasons of his own. Everyone except the two male leads appears in both shows at once, usually with one character reflecting the other.
“The performers in City of Angels move back and forth between both stories, playing their character in Stine’s world and their alter ego in the movie,” according to Barbara Wolf, Chair of CoSA’s award-winning Musical Theatre & Drama conservatory. “It’s all very clever and what makes City of Angels a musical like none other.”
The 570-seat Coronado Performing Arts Center Main Stage Theatre located at 650 D Avenue, is the venue for this sophisticated comedy with additional performances April 21 (7pm), April 22 (2pm), April 27 and 28 (both 7pm). Tickets are available at the box office 45 minutes prior to performance or online at https://cosamusical.eventbrite.com and range from $6-$18.
It's stylish, slick, and sassy! It would be a crime to miss it!
