Gidget Goes to Coronado!
Documentary Screening - “Accidental Icon: The REAL Gidget Story”+ Celebrity Panel

[Coronado, CA] On Saturday, September 13, 2014, the Coronado Performing Arts Center will host a special engagement documentary screening of “Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story.”A portion of the proceeds will benefit Coronado School of the Arts.

Those who grew up along the Southern California coast in the 1950’s and 60’s reflect back with fond memories of the “Golden Age” of surfing. It was an era that gave birth to iconic surf legends, music, and movie stars that forever altered the pop culture landscape. For Kathy Kohner Zuckerman (aka Gidget) the summer of 1957 was immortalized
as the coming-of-age story for one small girl determined to join the boys out in the “line-up.” From her father’s best-selling book, Gidget, the Little Girl with Big Ideas, inspired by her personal diary, to a movie and TV franchise, she inspired generations of young girls who consider it a "badge of honor" to be called “Gidget.”

Two-time Emmy-winning writer/director/producer, Brian Gillogly first interviewed Kathy “Gidget” Zuckerman in 1980 for “Surfing Sunset & Vine,” a feature article in Surfer Magazine. In 1999, he began pursuing a documentary on the life and times of the “real Gidget,” as contrasted with Hollywood depictions, and the influence of the resulting icon on surfing, women’s surfing in particular, and the broader culture. The result is a wonderful gem - “Accidental Icon : The REAL Gidget Story.”

The Screening
The hour-long documentary is narrated by Jorja Fox, star of the CBS series “CSI.” It features many of the actors, writers and directors who brought Gidget to the big and small screens share to their behind-the-scenes perspectives, including Sally Field, Cliff Robertson, and James Darren. Interviews include surf legends such as Layne Beachly, Mike Doyle and Mickey Munoz; and newer faces on the global surf scene, who share one thing in common, the nick name “Gidget.”

The Celebrity Panel -
Following the documentary, Gillogly will moderate a celebrity panel that will include Kathy Kohner Zuckerman and James Darren (Moon Doggie, 50’s & 60’s heartthrob), who will be together for the first time for a screening event; Mickey “Mongoose” Munoz (Sandra Dee’s stunt stand-in, legendary surfer); and Caryn Richman (The New Gidget 1986). This is an amazing opportunity to host all of these celebrities in one place to share their personal stories.

Book Signing with Kathy Kohner Zuckerman
A limited number of books will be available for pre-purchase for Kathy to sign following the event.
The event is being produced by the founder of Golden Fire Media, Merridee Book, and Jody Esquer, of Esquer Design Group, which specializes in event branding, graphic design and social marketing. Fans of both the Arts and surfing will appreciate this event as a perfect blend of the best of SoCal culture.
