­Coronado Rotary Club Music Competition – Win $2,500!

 If you are 14-18 years old and you play a musical instrument, you could win $2,500!

Here’s what you do:

  • Play repertoire between 3-8 minutes for a panel of judges

                                    …that’s it!

The preliminary contest is January 9th and 10th.

You’ll be judged on:

  • Ability
  • Technique
  • Interpretation
  • Stage Presence

Just ask past winners Ryan Wood or Kris Leslie - they have checks to prove it.

Here's more in-depth information:


The competition is open to high school students who live in Coronado or attend school in Coronado (or both), and who plan to continue their musical education beyond high school.

The competition is limited to Instrumentalists (All musical Instruments except voice are permitted).  An accompanist is allowed.

The competition is open to the performance of any genre of music (Classical, Jazz, Modern, etc.) including an original composition.

Competition performance MUST be between 3 and 8 minutes in length.

The District final winner will receive a $2,500 cash scholarship.  The three runner-ups in the final competition will each receive $500 cash scholarship.

All performers at the Club Finals will receive a cash award.  Regional winners are guaranteed $500 by advancing to the District Finals; regional performers who do NOT advance to Finals will receive a cash award.

The Rotary Club competition will be held in January.  The regional competitions will be held in March, followed by the District 5340 Final competition in April.  Specific dates for regional and final competitions will be determined by the District.


Musical ability, Tone Quality/Intonation (25%)  Familiarity and command of the instrument.

Musical empathy, Technique (25%)  Note accuracy, attack, release, articulation, rhythmic accuracy and precision.

Interpretation (25%)   Includes concepts of style, tempo, phrasing and dynamics. Does the instrument respond to the contestant in a manner that makes it desirable to listen to and make the listener want to hear more?

Stage Presence (25%)  Does the contestant have command of the stage (area of performance) and is there a sense of rapport with the audience, overall presentation, and showmanship?
