Cast of "A Piece of My Heart" Lays Wreath at Vietnam Vets MemorialPosted by: nancym 2 years, 4 months ago
March 3 was a wonderful and important day for members of CoSA/CHS's recent production of A PIECE OF MY HEART. The cast (Alana Schick, Angela Ahern, Katarina Gustin, Olivia Weinstein, Mercedes Hayes, Danielle Bongiovanni, and Josh Concepcion), stage manager (Rusty Broyles), and Director Kim Strassburger were invited to Naval Base Coronado for a ride on two Vietnam-era amphibious ships for a tour of San Diego Harbor, the laying of a wreath at the Amphibious Base's Vietnam War Memorial, and a special lunch/discussion with three female combat veterans including a Bronze Star honored Vietnam War Nurse.
Strassburger said, "We were treated so graciously by the commander of the Beach Masters unit, his staff, and the Base's Public Affairs Officer as well as the Base's school liaison, Amiee Gillig. The discussion with the three female combat veterans was enlightening and moving...not only about the Vietnam War, but about recent conflicts and especially the future of women in the Armed Services. It was an honor to attend, and I couldn't have asked for a more mature group of students or gracious hosts. It was a wonderful closing event for our production."
A highlight of the day was donning helmets and life preservers for a trip around San Diego Bay in the naval amphibious vessels. Strassburger ended the day by thanking everyone involved and reminding us that, "Art is education. The experience of acting in A PIECE OF MY HEART has opened hearts and minds to not only the Vietnam War era, but also to what vets of every war sacrifice."Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
