Dance Coach Presents Research at ConferencePosted by: nancym 4 years, 3 months ago
Matt Carney, Classical & Contemporary Dance coach, was invited to present his research on "Ballet Slippers and Combat Boots: A Mixed Strategy Approach to Arts Administration" at the International Diaspora Arts Festival at the University of Barbados-Cave Hill in March. Carney also taught and performed during the week-long conference.
The conference focused on "The Sustainability of Dance as an Art Form: Economics, Politics and the Philosophy of Resistance." Hosted on the beautiful island of Barbados, a unique place with a melting pot of culture, arts and creativity, artists and academics gathered to share ideas, creative solutions and vision, to keep the timeless motion of dance alive.
Said Carney of his experience, "I was struck by the difference in our priorities. We are constantly thinking of ways to use dance and use art to make money -- always needing to find more money. The people of Barbados are looking at dance as a way to preserve their culture. It brought home to me how important and integral dance is to all cultures, with or without the funding."Share on Twitter Share on Facebook
