SD Film Commissioner Visits Film ClassPosted by: nancym 1 year, 1 month ago
CoSA DigArts Film students shared an afternoon with San Diego Film Commissioner Jeff Deverett, accompanied by Barb Hopkins and Emma Sasson also from the San Diego Film Commission. Mr. Deverett, a veteran feature film producer and intellectual property lawyer, shared his wisdom, expertise, and vast experience, focusing on non-technical aspects that must be managed before and after the technical production of a film. His lecture covered elements such as concept, funding, pitching, financing, audience, and distribution. He also engaged students in CoSA's "The Business of Art" class who are studying copyright and fair use in Art.
One of his best nuggets of wisdom was: "What is more important than money or who has the best lawyers? Integrity! Integrity above all else as an artist." Mr. Deverett stressed the importance of not obsessing over money. "You can make money back. Once you lose your integrity you can't get that back."
CoSA Film teacher Edward Kramer was profoundly grateful for this guest artist visit, and is looking forward to future educational collaborations with Mr. Deverett and the San Diego Film Commission.
