Update from Instrumental Music AlumnusPosted by: nancym 1 month, 1 week ago
Hello folks at CoSA! I am an alum of the Instrumental Music program (attended 2006-2008), who left early to pursue my BA in Music at Bard College at Simon's Rock, and then continue my studies at the Boston Conservatory Masters of Music in Music Education program. I am writing to send a general THANK YOU to the program for being instrumental in my education and pursuit of becoming a music teacher myself. Teachers like Matt Heinecke and Dr. Carl Hammond were huge influences on me, and I remain in touch with them, ten years later.
I am also writing to let CoSA know that I am excited to be establishing a new string orchestra at the charter school I am teaching at in Dorchester, MA. Codman Academy is a Pre-K-12 Title I school serving 99% students of color, providing three free meals a day, and a mission to educate the whole student, "mind, body, and character". I will be starting my second year as Codman's music teacher, and in additional to compulsory elementary general music, students in 2nd-4th grades will have the option of joining our Elementary Orchestra on either violin or cello.
Because our school recognizes the needs of our community, we do not charge families for any part of their child's education. This means I'm on a campaign to raise the funds to rent 35 violins and 10 cellos for my excited future string players! Here is the link for our fundraiser: https://www.gofundme.com/codman-academy-elementary-orchestra If there are any e-publications or other ways our campaign could be shared with the CoSA community or alums, please pass it along! It would mean a lot, and I'm sure there are folks in the community who would be interested in helping get these kids some instrumental music in their lives. Thank you for your time! -Miles WilcoxShare on Twitter Share on Facebook
